Protecting Your Privacy on the Internet Overview
The Internet can be an amazing place - what would we do without it? We can find almost anything we need, whether we’re conducting research for school or work, looking up restaurant or movie reviews for a fun night out, or just browsing social media to stay in touch with friends - the Internet has made life easier and often, more entertaining.
However, in light of the 2017 Equifax data breach and the recent Facebook/Cambridge Analytica incident, it’s clear that the Internet can also be a dangerous place and we need to be careful with whom we share our information.
Thankfully, you don’t need to get rid of your Internet connected devices and vow to never connect to the web again. You can protect your privacy and personal information with a few best practices:
- Tighten up privacy settings on your devices, browsers, apps, social media accounts, connected home devices and anything else you connect to the Internet.
- On social media profiles, remove personal information that can be used to guess answers to security questions.
- Clear your cookies and cache regularly.
- Use strong passwords and don’t use the same passwords for multiple accounts, especially financial accounts.
Remember, when personal information is compromised in data breaches and cyber attacks, IDX Identity members have unlimited access to our team of experts. If you believe your information has been misused, don’t hesitate to email the IDX Care team.
